Leading Change One Student at a Time by Khole T.
My name is Khloe, and I am an upcoming junior at Shawnee High School. I have participated in Youth Action for Health Leadership (YAHL) for two years, and the program has contributed greatly to my personal growth and leadership development. YAHL, a program of the Tobacco Settlement Endowment Trust (TSET), gives students the opportunity to create meaningful change in their schools and communities by promoting healthy lifestyles and policies.
YAHL is especially important to me because it provides positive and accessible opportunities for youth in rural communities. Through its Elevate Student Health and CounterAct Tobacco campaigns, students are encouraged to advocate for healthier communities and make informed choices. The Elevate Student Health campaign has been especially impactful because I have seen how engaged students in my community are in improving health and wellness.
Through presentations at Shawnee Middle School and collaborations with community partners, I have educated students about nutrition, healthy habits and overall wellness. In turn, students have helped me understand how much their peers need positive reinforcement and support in finding healthy alternatives to nicotine use.
YAHL has shown me the importance of leadership, advocacy and using my voice to create meaningful change. It has strengthened my belief that youth have the power to make a difference in their communities today.
